Types of Appliances

Today, there are numerous orthodontic products and techniques. Fixed orthodontic appliances, commonly called “braces”, are still considered to be the reference and remain the most efficient and versatile corrective orthodontic appliances. They can be used to treat practically any type of malocclusion from the simplest of cases to the most complex ones.

There are however certain products offering aesthetic and performance advantages over others. The products and techniques we are using have been chosen for these reasons.

At Masters Orthodontics Chester you have the option of choosing clear or metal braces. Our orthodontist uses modern, state of the art braces with small, rounded dimensions to make them more comfortable, inconspicuous and easier to clean.

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces, also known as “train tracks” are still the most popular option when it comes to braces. That’s because they are the quickest and most cost-effective orthodontic treatment available.

Metal braces are the most common type of braces for orthodontic treatment. They are now much smaller, flatter, and more comfortable than in the past. Patients of all ages can opt for metal braces because they are efficient and reliable.

This conventional treatment option is comprised of braces (small squares) bonded to the front surface of your teeth, which are connected with very thin metal wires which apply gentle pressure to your teeth to help guide them into a more favourable and straight position. The wires are held in position with either metal or elastic ties. Elastic ties come in a variety of colours and therefore very popular with the younger patients!

Conventional Transparent braces

Clear braces developed as an alternative to the cosmetic demands of adult patients. They are just as effective as conventional metal braces but tend to be somewhat more expensive due to the material of which they are made of.

Transparent braces work in the same way as their metallic counterparts. They are a great alternative to metal braces for patients who want to achieve their dream smile in a more aesthetic manner.

Many people prefer transparent braces because they blend with the natural colour of the teeth. They are made of sapphire or ceramic, and for that reason they are less traumatic for the mucousa that lines the inside of your cheeks and lips.

At Masters Orthodontics we use the innovative Inspire Ice Clear braces. They are the best quality braces on the market. They are made of a sapphire crystalline material.

Not only are they discrete, they are practically invisible. Some aesthetic braces are white or a colour very similar to the colour of your enamel. We all have different shades and tones of enamel so sometimes other clear bracket alternatives struggle to blend satisfactorily to ones true colour.

Inspire ICE transparent braces are the most discreet option on the market, regardless of the colour of your teeth. In addition, they do not stain or discolour over time, so they maintain their appearance throughout the treatment.

Self Ligating Metal braces

At Masters Orthodontics we use Forestadent Bioquick Self Ligating braces.

Studies have shown that using the new “self-ligating” technology and treatment protocols reduce patient discomfort, require less adjustment appointments during treatment and allow to complete the majority of treatments 4 to 6 months faster than with conventional orthodontic techniques.

Self Ligating appliances are an innovative clinical technology that revolutionises orthodontic treatment by making it more efficient and more comfortable than ever before.

Traditional orthodontic techniques use metal braces requiring tying the archwires in with elastic ties or steel ligatures, causing friction during tooth movement. This requires heavier forces to move the teeth, resulting in more discomfort for patients and longer treatment time.

Masters Orthodontics Chester

Self-ligating braces do not require the use of elastic ties or steel ligatures. They have a built-in “sliding door” that holds the wire in place with little friction while allowing it to slide freely back and forth. This facilitates and accelerates tooth movement and causes less discomfort..

This system uses high-technology wires generating very light forces used to move the teeth. This results in less pressure to the teeth and greater comfort for patients.

Treatment time can be dramatically reduced and this translates into fewer adjustments and less frequent office visits to achieve treatment objectives.

Cosmetic self ligating braces offer aesthetics in combination with the advantages of self ligating braces.

We use Forestadent Quickclear braces made of a translucent ceramic which make them discreet yet extremely effective. They blend in seamlessly with your teeth making them practically Invisible.

They allow for better dental Hygiene as they do not require any elastic, rubber or metal ties.

As your teeth straighten with time, your metal wire will need to be changed periodically. The use of sliding clips can make the task of changing the wire much easier and hence allowing shorter appointments.

Lingual orthodontics is a type of Invisible brace where the braces are bonded to the inside of your teeth making them virtually invisible.

Lingual Orthodontics is especially suited for professionals whose aesthetics play a fundamental role in their daily lives and who need a discreet treatment with excellent results, or for people who need to perform professionally in public.

This is why public figures, executives, athletes, models, actors and actresses, TV presenters and musicians tend to opt for this type of orthodontic appliance.

The main advantage of Lingual Orthodontics is aesthetics during treatment. The fixed appliance is glued to the inside of the teeth. No one will know that you are undertaking orthodontic treatment unless you decide to tell them.

By using the latest advances in scanning and 3D technology, we can accurately model the shape of your teeth using CAD / CAM computer software thus allowing lingual braces will fit perfectly and snuggly to the back of your teeth. The wires are bent by precision robotics to match the exact shape and curvature of your teeth.

At Masters Orthodontics we are certified in two of the most widely used lingual bracket systems, INCOGNITO and WIN lingual braces. Both offer a completely customised treatment plan where each bracket is made to fit specifically on each individual tooth. In other words, it’s a completely bespoke appliance personalised to offer you the best possible end results.

Lingual braces do tend to be more expensive than other types of braces mainly due to the costs in their manufacturing process and the longer appointments required to adjust them.

Invisalign are virtually invisible aligners, which are made of a thermoplastic material uniquely developed for the Invisalign treatment plan, look similar to teeth-whitening trays. A series of Invisalign aligners are custom-made for you, to move your teeth in the sequence determined by myself.

Over the course of treatment, you will be supplied with a series of aligners. Each aligner will make slight adjustments to tooth position, a process that is mapped out in advance by us, specifically for your situation. When the aligners are placed on the teeth, they cause the teeth to gradually shift from their current position. After 1 week you will begin using the next set of aligners, which will continue the teeth straightening process.

Through the use of a patented thermoplastic design, Invisalign aligners move your teeth through the appropriate placement of controlled force. The main difference is that Invisalign not only controls the force, but also the timing of the force application. During each stage, only certain teeth are allowed to move. These movements are determined by myself as I map out your unique Invisalign treatment plan.

What are the primary benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible. No one may even notice that you're wearing them, making Invisalign a seamless fit with your lifestyle.

Invisalign aligners are removable. For the best results and a timely outcome, aligners should be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day. However, unlike with braces, you have the flexibility to remove your aligners to eat and drink what you want during treatment. And you can also remove the aligners to brush and floss as you normally would, for fresh breath and good oral hygiene.

There are no metal braces or wires that could cause irritation to your mouth, an advantage over traditional braces. Plus, since your office visits during treatment don't involve metal or wire adjustments, you'll likely spend less time in the doctor's chair.

Invisalign allows you to view your virtual results and treatment plan before you start so you can see how your straightened teeth will look when your treatment is complete. Instead of imagining how much better it can be, you'll be able to see it for yourself.

Dr. Laurence Masters is a Platinum Invisalign Provider which means he has extensive experience and know how with this type of orthodontic appliance.
