FIRST PHASE TREATMENT
This is what we call preventative or interceptive orthodontics. The main objective for the orthodontist is either try to maintain or create space for your child’s teeth, correct any unwanted habits (like thumb sucking) and obtain a balanced and harmonic relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
This is usually carried out in small children, hence the importance of early orthodontic screening. Sometimes children will show early signs of discrepancies in the size and position of their jaws during growth and might therefore be candidates for early interceptive treatment.
Undertaking early orthodontic treatment may sometimes prevent extractions of permanent teeth later on in a second phase or even prevent the need for possible surgical repositioning of the jaws when older.
